Complex Controls, Simplified

The Holland Aquatic Center expansion introduced new aquatic, fitness, and recreation spaces while modernizing portions of the existing facility. As part of the project, Grand Valley Automation was tasked with developing a comprehensive building automation solution capable of controlling and monitoring a wide range of mechanical systems. Beyond traditional HVAC controls, the facility required precise management of space temperature, humidity, building pressure, hydronic heating systems, pool water heating systems, and specialized aquatic environment equipment.

One of the project’s greatest challenges was maintaining uninterrupted facility operations during construction. The aquatic center remained open throughout the phased renovation, requiring careful coordination to ensure building comfort and pool temperatures were maintained at all times. During construction, the existing boiler plant was demolished and temporarily relocated while a new mechanical room was constructed. GVA coordinated multiple boiler relocations, maintained operation of legacy pneumatic control systems dating back to the original facility, and developed temporary control strategies to keep critical systems functioning throughout each phase of the project. The complexity increased further as construction delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic extended the project timeline by nearly three years.

The completed building automation system provides the Holland Aquatic Center with a centralized platform for monitoring and controlling a diverse collection of mechanical systems. By integrating pool dehumidification units, hydronic heating systems, pool heat exchangers, air handling equipment, energy recovery systems, snowmelt systems, and numerous ancillary systems into a single user-friendly interface, GVA delivered a modern controls solution that simplifies facility management while supporting energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term operational reliability.
